It’s been an incredibly long week of deliberating, planning, discussing, culling, and re-deliberating for the eight Artist-Curators behind WRECK CITY. We were thrilled to receive 101 applications from Calgary and beyond – thrilled and terrified! Our task was a difficult one, made more difficult by the awesome people who submitted to us. We want to send out a sincere Thank You to the Artists, Dancers, Poets, Writers, Musicians, and Performers who applied to WRECK CITY’s Open Call for Submissions – we are so lucky that this brilliant community wants to support our crazy DIY Art Adventures!
On an unhappy note, due to limited space, extremely limited resources, and about 40 pre-selected submissions from our first phase of Curation, we simply couldn’t accept all applications. But we hope all applicants will take solace in the fact that there are tons of pre-demolition buildings all over Calgary just waiting for curious Artists to discover them and transform them into WRECK CITIES of their own! There are also other ways to be involved – we’re going to need dozens and dozens of volunteers! We’re also launching a Crowd-Sourcing Campaign through www.investyyc.com is t-minus several days and counting. Stay tuned to our blog for updates and new info!
To clarify our Curatorial process, the Artist-Curators began by directly soliciting a limited number of Artists to work inside each house during WRECK CITY. Direct Curation is responsible for about half of our participants, and this phase of the process was mostly completed before the Call for Submissions was circulated. Following this phase, the Artist-Curators were all invited to participate by circulating individual Calls as part of the Open Call for Submissions, welcoming proposals from the broader arts community. Some Artist-Curators chose not to participate (this is one of the freedoms of making your own rules), but all eight Artist-Curators read all applications, deliberated as a group, and collectively selected successful applicants. This process was conducted as unbiasedly as possible, and with fair consideration paid to each application. Thank you to everyone who submitted.
Now that we have laid our process bare, without further ado, the Artist-Curators are delighted to announce the Artists behind WRECK CITY: An Epilogue for 809!

To all of our Artists, Welcome to the Team! We also want to send out a big THANK YOU to everyone who submitted to WRECK CITY’s Call for Submissions. Even though we can’t include all of you, we were so impressed, thrilled, and humbled by the 101 submissions we received. You are SUPER AWESOME! Keep up the grooviness.
This is a brilliant idea and I am eager to check out the houses!!! Is the hope for this project to happen with other properties in Calgary that are going to be demolished?
WRECK CITY is a simple concept, and in that sense it could easily happen again in other spaces, organized by other artists. Or perhaps the same artists! Talk to us again after the Opening and we’ll let you know whether we’d do it again or not… but I guess we already have, considering The House Project in 2009! Yes, big thumbs up!! Great to see the amazing Studio Cartel crew in there too …very exciting!!
Looking forward to being there this week!
